Andrea Emde (born June 17, 1972, in Berlin, Germany) is a contemporary painter based in Mexico. She works primarily with Sumi ink on watercolor paper, incorporating graphite, watercolor pencil, and acrylics. Emde is best known for her monochrome ink paintings, wich combine the Japanese Wabi-Sabi philosophy with elements of Sumi-E techniques to explore the beauty of imperfection.
Her work focuses on figure painting, often depicting the human form in a minimalist and expressive manner.
Emde’s artistic language is characterized by a predominantly black-and-white palette, intentional simplicity, and the celebration of natural flaws. In addition to human figures, her subject matter includes landscapes, botanical motifs, portraits, and abstract compositions. A significant project, "Celebrate Your Body", features over 200 monochrome watercolor portraits of women from around the world, honoring the natural beauty of the human body.
